The is a collaborative effort of the Mathematics Departments at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥, La Salle University, Rutgers University – Camden, and Temple University. The goal of the conference is to provide professional opportunities and research exposure to undergraduate students from the Philadelphia area interested in mathematics.
Many ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ and Haverford mathematics students attended the 2023 Philadelphia Undergraduate Mathematics Conference held on April 1, 2023, at Rutgers University Camden campus. Highlights of the conference included plenary lectures by Ximena Catepillán, professor emerita at Millersville University, on "", Philip Gressman, professor of mathematics and undergraduate chair at the University of Pennsylvania, on "", and Benedetto Piccoli, Joseph and Loretta Lopez Chair of Mathematics and Vice Chancellor for Research at Rutgers University – Camden, on "", undergraduate talks, a poster session, and an "Exploring Careers in Mathematics Panel."
÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ math majors Yesenia (Nia) Hernandez '23 and Felicia Pursner '25, gave poster presentations on an "Improved Computational Approach to Measuring the Tightness of Molecular Knots" and on "Mathematically Modeling Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)", respectively.
One of the conference attendees Jo Amuso '24, an A.B./M.A. student in mathematics pursuing a Japanese minor at Haverford College, remarked, "I’m very glad that I went, both to hear other students speak about their research and get career advice. Going to events like this shows me how versatile a math degree is."
