Human Subjects Researchers - Faculty

Important information for faculty who conduct research with human subjects

Research Training

We require all researchers to complete basic training for the safe and ethical treatment of human subjects in research. All training modules can be found on the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program website:

There are 10 required modules in the Social & Behavioral Research - Basic/Refresher course. If you believe any of the optional modules would benefit your research training, you can include them in your CITI course.

The IRB will automatically receive any completion reports upon a researcher completing all modules and associated quizzes. Save copies of these reports for your own records. CITI Instructions for Faculty/Staff/Mentors

Research Protocol Submissions

Check the Human Subjects Research site for updated IRB meeting dates and  guidance.

Additional resources and documents for IRB submissions can be found in the Documents section of Mentor.

Federally Funded Researchers

Federally funded researchers are required to report Conflict of Interest and are often required to be up-to-date on Responsible Conduct of Research training.

Be sure to check out the Financial Conflict of Interest and Responsible Conduct of Research pages for more information.

All federally funded researchers should fill out this  every semester to identify any faculty, student, or staff who are financially compensated from federal grants.

FACULTY ADVISORS

It is the responsibility of faculty advisors to determine whether a student project qualifies as a practicum/internship/class project or whether it constitutes research and must therefore be reviewed by the ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ IRB before data collection may begin. The IRB cannot provide retrospective approvals or reviews. All IRB reviews and decisions must be made before data collection begins. Advisors who are uncertain whether IRB review is needed are encouraged to err on the side of caution and contact the IRB chair for advice via irb@brynmawr.edu.

It is the further responsibility of faculty advisors to assist students in preparing review materials for the IRB and to ensure that the research is conducted in accordance with federal regulations and ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ policy. The newly created STUDENT CHECKLIST must be used for student protocols. Please work with your students to ensure protocols satisfy all requirements in the checklist.

Regardless of whether a student project constitutes research or qualifies as a practicum, internship, or class project as defined here, faculty advisors have an affirmative obligation to:

  • Provide ongoing supervision and oversight of all collection of data from human participants
  • Assist students to develop projects that involve the minimum degree of risk to participants consistent with the goals of the project (The use of audio and videotaping should be carefully considered in terms of potential risks to participants)
  • Ensure that students understand their ethical obligations in carrying out their assignments, including minimizing risks to participants, providing informed consent procedures, and protecting the confidentiality of participants’ data
