Information for TA Candidates in German

Thank you for your interest in the teaching assistantships at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥â€™s Department of German.

Students in Elementary German and Intermediate (German 001/101 in the fall semester and 002/102 in the spring semester) are required to attend an additional hour per week with TAs trained during a pre-semester workshop.

To be eligible for a German TA  position, you must be a ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ undergraduate and be enrolled in or have completed courses at the 200-level or have equivalent proficiency in German.

Assistants are selected and hired by the department at the completion of the pre-semester workshop. Please note that we try to place as many candidates as possible but we cannot promise you a job ahead of time. If you are on financial aid, you should, therefore, make sure you have a secure job for next year in addition to this one.

TAs will be expected to work with students enrolled in Elementary and Intermediate German (German 001/101 in the fall semester and 002/102 in the spring semester) at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥.

TAs will be expected to do the following:

  1. Drill the students with the material taught in class by a professor of the German Department.

  2. Supervise interactive activities designed to encourage communication in German. Such activities will include rapid-paced communicative drills, dialogues, simulations, pantomime, role-playing, discussions, debates, interviews, skits, and task-oriented demonstrations.

  3. Attend the weekly meetings with the other TA(s) and the language coordinator of the German Department. In meetings, you will discuss the activities and tutorials from the previous week and plan for the coming week.

TAs work for 2 1/2 hours per week:

  • 1 hour per week with students in tutorials.
  • 1 hour per week of preparation for the tutorials.
  • ½ hour per week in meetings with the language coordinator and other TAs.

Occasionally, assistants teach two sections. Since they prepare the same material for two sections the total would then be 3½ hours.

You will be paid a good work-study rate for these positions. The rate for 2023-24 is $14.00 per hour (rate for 2024/2025 TBD).

  • Interested candidates in these positions must read the general information about the position and complete the no later than May 1st.

  • Once you have been notified that your application has been received and accepted, please fill out the at your earliest convenience, no later than June 1st.
