Class of 2021: Anna Thompson

June 2, 2021
""

Name: Anna Thompson

Major: Linguistics and Math

Hometown: El Segundo, CA

Key ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ Experiences: Something that I have come to value from my experience at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ is how so many of the things I have done now are what a younger version of myself would've wanted me to do. In third grade, I think, my love of math really began, and now I am a Math major and a math tutor. I performed a lot even back then, and at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥, I had the opportunity to act with the Shakespeare Performance Troupe, sing with the Bi-Co Chamber Singers and the Renaissance Choir, and play French Horn with the Bi-Co Orchestra and Jazz Band. Funnily, I was rather interested in genetics in middle school, and while I am not a biology major, I performed in the Brecht Forensics workshop and took a course that applied evolutionary biology to linguistics: how cool is that! My interests in teaching and work with technology from high school really blossomed as well, in my taking education and computer science courses, TAing for the linguistics department, and my work with digital scholarship at LITS. I could go on, covering how each experience really does connect to something I loved earlier in life, but for now, hours before graduation really, I am simply grateful.

Message for the rest of the Class of 2021: My message to the Class of 2021 is this poem that I sang a choral arrangement of with the chamber singers in Fall 2019. Much love, peace, and rest to all of you:

"There Will Be Rest"
Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)

There will be rest, and sure stars shining
Over the roof-tops crowned with snow,
A reign of rest, serene forgetting,
The music of stillness holy and low.
I will make this world of my devising
Out of a dream in my lonely mind.
I shall find the crystal of peace, – above me
     Stars I shall find.
