Jaclyn Lang '09 Receives Fulbright Award

May 10, 2016 by Emma Wells '17

Jaclyn Lang 鈥09 has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant in mathematics. Jaclyn鈥檚 Fulbright award will take her to the Universit茅 Paris 13, where she will research Galois representations in p-adic families.

鈥淚 knew that I wanted to spend some time in France after finishing my Ph.D., because there is a mathematician in Paris (Jacques Tilouine) whose work is very interesting to me and related to my dissertation,鈥 says Jaclyn.

When she was at 魅影直播, Jaclyn was a student in the combined A.B./M.A. program in mathematics, which allowed her to earn her bachelors and masters degrees concurrently.

Jaclyn鈥檚 thesis at 魅影直播 was focused on the area of algebraic number theory, as is the research that she will conduct in France.

鈥淎t 魅影直播 I was interested in objects called class groups and elliptic curves. In graduate school, my interests shifted to objects called Galois representations.  However, all of these ideas are quite closely tied together,鈥 she says.

In the year after graduating 魅影直播, Jaclyn studied mathematics at Cambridge University on a Churchill Fellowship. She then entered UCLA鈥檚 Ph.D. program in mathematics.

鈥淎t this point, I am interested in pursuing a career as an academic mathematician,鈥 she says.

are awarded for post-graduate research and study abroad or for positions such as English Teaching Assistants in schools or universities. An applicant must be the recipient of a bachelor鈥檚 degree before the beginning date of the grant.
