Motivational Interviewing: An Overview with Application
Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based and person-centered counseling technique for eliciting and supporting behavioral change. As our systems of care become increasingly recovery oriented, practitioners need tools for eliciting individuals鈥 involvement in planning and implementing their own recovery strategies. Motivational Interviewing is one such tool.
Using a combination of lecture, discussion, role play and video examples, this two consecutive day program will provide participants with some of the building blocks of Motivational Interviewing for use in service practice.
As a person-centered and -driven technique, Motivational Interviewing is inherently inclusive of diverse cultures and belief systems. In addition, teaching examples will include discussion of counselor biases and the potential impact of these on the behavior change process.
Learning Objectives for this 2-day series are 1) learn the Stages of Change and interventions appropriate at each stage; 2) become familiar with the spirit and core principles of Motivational Interviewing; 3) use at least three component techniques of Motivational Interviewing; 4) examine and reframe the concept of 鈥渞esistance鈥; and 5) apply MI strategies to the process of treatment/change planning.
This workshop is appropriate for all levels of practitioners in varied practice settings.
